“Snow in Africa? These 5 Countries Will Surprise You!”

Whenever we think of Africa, we imagine deserts, jungle safaris and hot weather. But did you know that there are places in Africa that experience snowfall? Yes, it is true! There are many places in Africa that receive snowfall every year. You might be surprised to hear this, but there are some countries in Africa that are covered in snow in winters due to their high mountains and cold climate.

Be it the Atlas Mountains in Morocco or Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania – these places look exactly like Europe in winters. In this blog, we will tell you about 5 countries in Africa that receive snowfall. So, let’s get to know this cold and surprising side of Africa.

1. South Africa

South Africa

South Africa is usually known for its beaches and jungle safaris, but it also snows! Snow falls during winters (June to August), especially in the Drakensberg Mountains and areas around the Lesotho border. Places like Sani Pass and Matruhsberg are famous for snow viewing and walking. Temperatures in the high mountains go below zero and sometimes activities like skiing take place. This cold side of South Africa surprises people. It is not just a hot country, but also a snowy wonder of Africa.

2. Ethiopia

Ethiopia

Ethiopia is usually known for its hot weather and mountainous terrain, but there is a part of it where it snows. The Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia are more than 4,500 meters above sea level. During the winter season (December to February), the temperature here drops so low that snow starts falling. These snow-capped mountains present a very beautiful sight. This area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and rare animals are also found here, such as the gelada monkey and the Ethiopian wolf.

3. Morocco

Morocco

People often associate Morocco with deserts and markets, but it can snow. Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, especially the High Atlas, are covered in snow in winter. The city of Ifrane, known as the “Switzerland of Morocco”, experiences cold and snow year-round. Ski resorts like Oukaïmeden offer tourists and locals a chance to ski and play in the snow. Morocco shows that Africa has more than just hot weather, but also cold and snowy regions.

4. Tanzania

Tanzania

Yes, it snows in Tanzania—thanks to Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Towering at 5,895 meters, Kilimanjaro’s summit is often covered in snow and ice, especially during the colder months of June to October. The famous Uhuru Peak is known for its breathtaking snow-capped views, attracting trekkers from around the world. While the rest of Tanzania enjoys a tropical climate, the mountain’s high elevation creates conditions for year-round snow. However, due to climate change, Kilimanjaro’s glaciers are shrinking, making the snowy summit an even more precious sight to witness before it’s gone.

5. Algeria

Algeria

Algeria is often known for its large Sahara Desert, but its northern mountainous regions receive snowfall every year. Especially in the Aurès Mountains and the Tell Atlas mountains, good snow falls between December and February. Cities like Batna and Setif are covered in a white sheet of snow. Not only this, sometimes snowfall has been seen even in desert areas like Ain Sefra, which creates a wonderful view of snow on the sand. This cold form of Algeria surprises people, because not only summer but also winter is seen here.
