As soon as I arrived in Amritsar, I was welcomed with the warm smiles of the locals and the rich smell of spices in the air. The city has an old-world charm with busy streets, rickshaws, colorful markets, and of course, the sound of Punjabi music in the background. It’s a place that immediately makes you feel alive. The Golden Temple: A Spiritual Experience
The first place I visited was the iconic Golden Temple, also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib. No pictures or videos can ever do justice to the beauty and peace this place offers. The temple is covered in gold and surrounded by a holy water tank called the Amrit Sarovar. The sight of its reflection shimmering in the water is simply magical.
Visitors from all over the world come here, regardless of their religion. The energy is calm and welcoming. Volunteers serve free food (Langar) to everyone, which is one of the largest community kitchens in the world. I joined in, sitting cross-legged with people from different countries and backgrounds, sharing a simple, delicious meal. It was truly humbling.
Jallianwala Bagh: A Touching History
Just a short walk from the Golden Temple is Jallianwala Bagh, a public garden that holds a dark chapter in India’s history. This is where, in 1919, British troops opened fire on a peaceful gathering, killing hundreds. Today, the bullet marks are still visible on the walls, and there is a memorial to honor those who died.
Walking through the garden, I could feel the silence and pain of that day. It’s a must-visit to understand the strength and sacrifice of the Indian people during the freedom struggle.
Wagah Border: Patriotism and Power
One of the most unique experiences in Amritsar is attending the Wagah Border Ceremony, which happens every evening at the India-Pakistan border. Thousands of people gather to watch the energetic and powerful Beating Retreat ceremony.
The energy is electric! Crowds cheer, patriotic songs play, and soldiers from both countries perform an intense and perfectly synchronized drill. It’s a mix of pride, joy, and excitement. Don’t forget to reach early if you want a good seat!
Food in Amritsar: A Feast for the Soul
Amritsar is a paradise for food lovers. Every meal here feels like a celebration. From the famous Amritsari Kulcha (stuffed bread) to Chole Bhature, Lassi, and Makki di Roti with Sarson da Saag, the flavors are bold, rich, and unforgettable.
One of my favorite food spots was Kesar Da Dhaba, a traditional eatery that’s been around for over 100 years. Their dal makhani and parathas are out of this world. Also, try Guru Ka Langar at the Golden Temple for a wholesome, spiritual dining experience.
Street food lovers will find joy in the narrow lanes around Hall Bazaar and Lawrence Road. The pani puri, jalebi, and chaat here will leave you craving more.
Shopping in Amritsar
If you love shopping for traditional items, Amritsar won’t disappoint. I picked up Phulkari dupattas, Punjabi juttis (embroidered shoes), and Amritsari papad and wadiyan (spiced snacks). Hall Bazaar is one of the main shopping areas, and you’ll find everything from clothes to handicrafts here.

Culture and Hospitality
What stood out the most during my trip was the warm hospitality of the people. Whether it was a shopkeeper offering me tea or a stranger helping with directions, the locals were always ready with a smile.
Punjabis are known for their big hearts and loud laughter, and that’s exactly what I found. From chatting with taxi drivers to dancing at a local event, every interaction was memorable.
